Clinical psychology assessments are to investigate psychological concerns like mood, coping, anxiety and depression. Sessions are usually 50 minutes long but may be up to 90 minutes depending on circumstances. After the initial appointment we jointly consider a plan of action, which may include referral to another specialist. I usually see adolescents and young adults on their own, but for younger children parental involvement is crucial.
My approach is integrative and I use a range of therapeutic techniques, such as solution-focused, cognitive behavioural, existential psychotherapy and attachment-based psychodynamic psychotherapies. Initially we contract for six sessions; thereafter a joint decision is made about further work which may be open-ended or focused on specific goals, depending on the circumstances and needs of the child.
